Lets get down to business.

Alright, today will be a short, sweet, and to-the-point episode about a convo I have had not once, not twice, but three times this week with my private clients and mastermind students.

Which is, and I quote, “Ayla – no one is seeing my content…the algorithm is out to get me.”

So naturally, I am bringing it to the mic and sharing my thoughts with you.

Take Back Your Power

First things first, regarding the algorithm – one thing about me and my mindset around business and life are that I never give anyone or anything (especially technology) power over my personal or business results. When it comes to my body and my health – regardless if my husband orders subway and pizza every night, I still own how I respond and if I choose to also indulge in this behaviour (which, trust me, happens, and makes me want to scream).

I am big on OWNING where I am in any aspect of my life. So to place external factors such as weather, relationships, finances, technology, or an algorithm is something I work hard on eliminating.

Ultimately, we are the creators and the dictators of our own lives, and no one should hold that power – ever. So when it comes to the algorithm on Instagram – to give it that much power is something 

I’m going to challenge you on – and instead, I want you to understand it and take ownership of playing the game. 

Breaking Down the Algorithm

So let’s talk about some thighs we need to know about this algorithm. It’s constantly changing, and it always will – get used to it! It’s a computer, and IG spends billions on having people work on it, update it, optimize it, and scale it. And at the end of the day, it’s a business that wants to make money. How does it do this? 

By keeping people plugged into the app and ADS = $$

As a content creator, how can you talk to this computer and start to play the game? Because you have to speak to it and make it work for you – you have no choice. It might be a tough conversation for some of you, but it’s necessary if you’re using social media platforms. 

So starting a discussion with the algorithm begins with posting content. When you post a piece of content, the algorithm starts to mumble, and how it fully starts to chat is through engagement. Period. End of story – so if your content gets a ton of likes, comments, shares, and saves within the first 30-60 minutes of being live, this tell’s the algorithm that this is a spicy piece of content that needs to be shown to more people. So it will show it to another 10% and then another 10% of your audience, and so and so forth. Think of it like an echo chamber. You start to talk into a cave, and if what you’re saying resonates with people, the algorithm gives it a volume boost until all of your audience can hear the reverberation of your voice. 

If your content is posted, and it gets no likes, comments, saves, shares – zero engagement – then this tells the algorithm that this content isn’t going to keep people on the app – so it will stop boosting it, and your voice will get lost in the noise of other conversations.

So What Does This Tell Us? Two Things.

Engagement + relationships on IG are essential, but what’s even more critical is how FIRE your content is. 

At the end of the day, if you’re content is hitting home, landing with your audience, inspiring, educating, relating, and entertaining them – they will engage, and take action with likes, comments, saves or shares. 

So my loves – my number one rule of thumb is to FOCUS ON CREATING BAD ASS- VALUABLE AF CONTENT THAT INSPIRES YOUR AUDIENCE. PERIOD. DOT

Take ownership and control of your content and your platform – step up your content game – treat it like a business. I say it all the time, and I’ll repeat it – when we treat social media and our content like a business, this is when it will start to reward us like a business.

I’m not saying you need to be posting 2x a day, seven days a week, but of course, if you do this, it will enhance your chances of your content being seen. 

What I am saying is to create content that marks your audience feel something, take action, and BE CONSISTENT.

“But The Algorithm Is Out To Get Me!”

If you feel like “the algorithm is out to get you,” I want you to ask yourself, when was the last time I posted or created? How about the time before that? And the tie before that? And how long have I been doing this?

With anything in business or life, consistency truly is the magic pill – you have to keep going – day by day – one step at a time.

If you posted once and then ghosted your account for days and days and weeks and weeks – you’re telling the algorithm that you’re not a contender. So, A) it won’t favour you, and B) – you’re also not showing up for your people.

If you want your audience and your customers to take you seriously as a business owner and content creator – YOU NEED TO SHOW UP FOR THEM – ALL THE TIME.

Think Of It Like a Friendship!

Think of social media as a friendship. We all have that friend, and maybe you are that friend that comes the day or the day before you’re supposed to hang out or go for dinner, and you know you’re going to get that text:

“Hey girl, so sorry, but I’m not feeling well. I have to take a rain check.”
“Hey, babe – something came up. I need to cancel tonight.”

This is the same with how we show up online within our businesses – if we show up day after day – your audience starts to depend on us, share us, and eventually buy from us when they have a problem we know how to solve.

But if we show up for three days and then go silent for ten repeatedly, this is also what they expect.

So ask yourself: how do you want to be seen by your audience? As a dependable, consistent authority? Or the creator who sometimes shows up and sometimes doesn’t?

Relationship Building

Creating authentic relationships is the next critical part of your content being seen.This has been a game-changer for my business in so many ways, but I won’t lie; it takes work.

So I want you to ask yourself – how much time am I spending every single day starting convos, following up, liking, commenting AND actively engaging with other accounts? This is huge huge huge, and another way you talk to the algorithm.

When you’re having active convos with your clients and potential clients – this tells the algorithm that you are quote-on-quote “friends.” Therefore, they should show your content to these people and vice versa.

So pay attention to the actions you’re also taking – because the more you engage with accounts, the more you like posts, comment on posts, share and save posts – the more those posts will start to show up for you and vice versa.

I recommend carving out 15-20 minutes a day (not a tremendous amount of time) – to engage with other accounts – set a timer – we don’t need you going down a rabbit hole of endless ad mindless scrolling – TREAT THIS LIKE A BUSINESS PROCESS.

Creating relationships and nurturing them is HOW you will get your content seen AND, ultimately, how you will be able to sell on social media.

So at the end of the day, create sick content, stay consistent AF, and build relationships with your current followers and potential customers – THAT, my friends, is how you will see your content. And until next week, I love you beauties so freaking much, and I will talk to you soon.
